Men will be required to fight unless they have a physical disability (this does not include temporary problems such as injuries - if you’re not 100% then you shouldn’t test). Women must either fight or do self defense (5 movements). Women doing self defense will not be allowed to choose a familiar uke, especially her dojo instructor. She should be able to perform the techniques realistically and effectively on anyone.

One kata mistake will be considered acceptable. Further mistakes during performance of katas will not be acceptable.
Testing will be closed - no family members, instructors, visitors, etc.

NO DISRESPECT WILL BE TOLERATED BEFORE, DURING OR AFTER TESTING. Conduct yourselves in a courteous manner at all times.

There are no refunds. Once the testing fee is paid it will not be returned. If you do not pass you must the fees to test again. Test results will be sent to you by mail.

REMEMBER - There are a lot of things that make a kata passable, but simply going through a series of movements is not enough. You must have a smooth combination of speed, power, focus, balance, technique, being on target, good stance, etc. We don’t expect a 6th Kyu’s kata to look like that of a Shodan, and we certainly don’t expect a Shodan’s kata to look like a 6th Kyu’s.
